Zea Detailing provides mobile gelcoat correction & oxidation removal in Pompano Beach & Hillsboro Beach — at Sands Harbor Resort & Marina, Hillsboro Inlet Fishing Center, Loggerhead Marina – Hidden Harbour, and private docks in Harbor Village and Garden Isles — for boats from 20 to 100+ feet. Licensed, bonded and insured; based in West Palm Beach; Broward County.

What it is: Gelcoat correction is the machine compounding and polishing of a boat's fiberglass gelcoat to remove the oxidized, chalky top layer and restore true color and gloss. Done properly it makes most faded hulls look new again and avoids the cost of painting.

Gelcoat Correction on Pompano Beach water and driveways

A center console that runs Sailfish Alley out of Hillsboro Inlet Fishing Center five mornings a week shows oxidation in a pattern we can read before we touch it: topsides burn chalky where inlet spray dries in full sun, while the shaded side stays closer to original. Dry-stack hulls out of Loggerhead Marina – Hidden Harbour come in cleaner but carry forklift rub along the chines and rack dust baked into the gelcoat. Both get the same first step, a decontamination wash so compound cuts gelcoat and not salt. From there it is a cut-and-refine sequence, verified under inspection light at every stage.

We work off the dock in Harbor Village, Garden Isles, Cypress Harbor and the canals off Lake Santa Barbara, and we bring our own power and water when the pedestal is not an option. On Hillsboro Mile, where estates run ocean to Intracoastal, we clear gate and dockmaster access first, same at Sands Harbor Resort & Marina and Hillsboro Club. Racked boats we schedule with the yard so the hull is down and dry before we start. Expect a multi-day job on a chalked hull, morning starts to stay ahead of surface heat, and a protection stage the same visit.

What Pompano Beach does to a finish

Inlet salt, run daily

Boats here run the inlet constantly. Salt crust after a Sailfish Alley morning starts pitting stainless and spotting glass if it sits — same-week washdowns are the baseline, not the upgrade.

Dual exposure on Hillsboro Mile

Ocean spray over the dune, Intracoastal haze at the dock. Estate yachts on the Mile take salt from both sides; dark hulls and brightwork need coating plus a disciplined cadence.

Dry-stack and lift-kept hulls

Hidden Harbour racks and canal lifts keep hulls dry — ideal for coating — but forklift rub marks and rack dust need attention generic washers skip. We coordinate pulls with the yard.

How gelcoat correction gets done right

  1. 01

    Condition assessment

We evaluate oxidation depth and gelcoat thickness before recommending a cut level.

  2. 02

    Wash & decontamination

Salt, scum, and bonded contamination off first — you can't polish dirt.

  3. 03

    Wet compounding

Heavy-cut stage removes the oxidized layer and deep defects.

  4. 04

    Refinement polish

Progressively finer stages restore clarity, depth, and true color.

  5. 05

    Protection

Sealant or ceramic coating locks in the result — corrected gelcoat left bare re-oxidizes fast.

Gelcoat Correction in Pompano Beach — FAQ

Good questions

How much does gelcoat correction cost?

$20 per linear foot topsides and $15 per foot hull sides, charged per step. Most boats need two to three steps, so a 42-foot hull runs about $2,940 for two steps and $4,410 for three. We confirm the step count after seeing the hull, and protection is included on the final pass.

My hull is chalky white — is it too far gone?

Usually not. Heavy oxidation looks terminal but most gelcoat has enough depth for a full restoration. We assess first and tell you honestly what the surface will support. The transformations in our gallery started exactly where your boat is now.

Do you service boats at Sands Harbor and Hillsboro Inlet Fishing Center?

Yes. We service boats at Sands Harbor Resort & Marina, Hillsboro Inlet Fishing Center, and the dry stacks at Loggerhead Hidden Harbour. We carry the insurance certificates marinas require and coordinate access directly with the dockmaster or yard.

Can you work on the Hillsboro Club docks or at a Hillsboro Mile estate?

Private Intracoastal slips along Hillsboro Mile are staff- or captain-coordinated: quiet equipment, no signage, and a program set to the vessel rather than our calendar. The Hillsboro Club is a private club — access there is arranged through the member, their captain, or club staff, and we follow the club's vendor requirements.

Our Viking sits on Hillsboro Mile with Awlgrip topsides. Can that be corrected instead of repainted?

Usually, yes. Awlgrip and Alexseal are thin compared to gelcoat, so we cut conservatively with finer pads and verify under inspection light before each pass. Chalked paint that still has film left comes back to gloss. Once it is through to primer, correction will not save it.

Our boat stays on a lift on a canal off Lake Santa Barbara. Does that change the correction?

Yes, in your favor. Lift-kept hulls avoid waterline staining, so we spend the time on topsides oxidation and the transom, where Intracoastal sun does the damage. We work from the dock or alongside, and we finish the underside of the chines before the boat goes back down.
