Gelcoat Correction in Highland Beach

Multi-stage wet compounding and polishing that removes oxidation, haze, and dock rash and brings back the gloss the builder intended.

Motor yacht hull polished to a deep shine at a private Intracoastal slip

Zea Detailing provides mobile gelcoat correction & oxidation removal in Highland Beach & Gulf Stream — at Seawood Marina, and private docks in Ocean Blvd estates and Place Au Soleil — for boats from 20 to 100+ feet. Licensed, bonded and insured; based in West Palm Beach; Palm Beach County.

What it is: Gelcoat correction is the machine compounding and polishing of a boat's fiberglass gelcoat to remove the oxidized, chalky top layer and restore true color and gloss. Done properly it makes most faded hulls look new again and avoids the cost of painting.

Gelcoat Correction on Highland Beach water and driveways

A private deep-water slip behind one of the Ocean Blvd estates sits close enough to the Intracoastal Waterway channel that passing sportfish send wake up the hull sides. That spray dries under the salt haze rolling in over A1A / Ocean Blvd, and the transom and waterline chalk well before the topsides do. On a Viking or Invincible kept here we find the oxidation heaviest along the waterline band and the sun-facing side, so we test-spot both before choosing a compound. The gelcoat is usually sound underneath; it needs the dead top layer cut back through a multi-stage compound and polish, then sealed before the next channel wash.

We work these boats in the slip, hull sides and transom from the dock and a float, so the boat stays in its berth. Scheduling runs through household staff or the captain, the same detailer comes every visit, and the truck carries no signage through the Gulf Stream core or Place Au Soleil. We start early, before the afternoon breeze pushes salt haze onto fresh polish, check each stage under inspection light before moving on, and lay down the protection stage the same day so the gelcoat is never left bare overnight. At Seawood Marina we clear wash-down and staging with the dock office, and time compounding sets around the channel wake.

What Highland Beach does to a finish

Channel wake & spray exposure

Slips just off the ICW channel get constant wake splash — waterline and transom need more frequent attention than protected dockage.

Ocean-side salt haze

Direct ocean proximity means salt film on every surface, every day — including brightwork and glass. Our washdown standard is chamois-dry, spot-free, metals wiped.

Privacy-first service

Same detailer every visit, staff-coordinated scheduling, and no signage. Many of our clients here we've never met in person — by design.

How gelcoat correction gets done right

  1. 01

    Condition assessment

We evaluate oxidation depth and gelcoat thickness before recommending a cut level.

  2. 02

    Wash & decontamination

Salt, scum, and bonded contamination off first — you can't polish dirt.

  3. 03

    Wet compounding

Heavy-cut stage removes the oxidized layer and deep defects.

  4. 04

    Refinement polish

Progressively finer stages restore clarity, depth, and true color.

  5. 05

    Protection

Sealant or ceramic coating locks in the result — corrected gelcoat left bare re-oxidizes fast.

Gelcoat Correction in Highland Beach — FAQ

Good questions

How much does gelcoat correction cost?

$20 per linear foot topsides and $15 per foot hull sides, charged per step. Most boats need two to three steps, so a 42-foot hull runs about $2,940 for two steps and $4,410 for three. We confirm the step count after seeing the hull, and protection is included on the final pass.

My hull is chalky white — is it too far gone?

Usually not. Heavy oxidation looks terminal but most gelcoat has enough depth for a full restoration. We assess first and tell you honestly what the surface will support. The transformations in our gallery started exactly where your boat is now.

Can you coordinate entirely through our house manager or captain?

Yes — much of our Highland Beach and Gulf Stream work is arranged through household staff or captains. We handle scheduling, access, and reporting without needing the owner involved.

Our slip is right off the channel — does that change the program?

It changes the cadence. Channel-side slips take continuous wake spray, so waterlines and transoms foul faster. We typically recommend weekly washdowns with quarterly deep details for boats on the main channel.

Will channel wake interrupt a correction on a slip right off the Intracoastal Waterway?

It can, which is why we time compounding sets between the heavier traffic and work the waterline band early. If a wake wets a panel mid-pass, we re-clean and redo that section rather than polish over salt. On a private deep-water slip this is a timing issue, not a quality one.

Can you correct the hull without anyone from the household meeting you in Highland Beach & Gulf Stream?

Yes. We coordinate dock access and power through your staff or captain, arrive unmarked, and send the same detailer each visit. You get inspection-light photos of each stage and the protection step before we leave, so you can review the work from anywhere without being on the dock.
